Mawanga & Kwitone Rock Art Day Tour

Mawanga Rock Art is one of the main Rock Art sites on the Lake Victoria islands. The rock art on the island consists of geometrical paintings that were made between 2000 and 4000 years ago by the Twa-hunter gatherers who inhabited the place initially. Today, the site of the rock art is inhabited by the Suba people who used the sites for rainmaking as recently as the 1980s. Another Rock Art site that you can explore on the island is the Kwitone Rock Art site.

The Mawanga Rock Art site is situated in the a cave a short distance from Mawanga village where a boat jetty is situated. The rock art site faces the lake and the Nzenze Island, which is a sacred site for many Suba clans.

The Kwitone shelter is situated close to the top of the mountain above the sacred forest and can be accessed via Mawanga after a hike of about 40 minutes.

On this tour, you will visit Kwitone Paintings and Mawanga Rock Arts.
