Thimlich Ohinga is an archeological site and probably the major attraction in Migori County. In Luo, Thimlich Ohinga means “frightening dense forests” and refers to a rock dwelling similar to the Great Zimbabwe that was built about 500 years ago and was formerly a site of a major Luo settlement before it was abandoned early in the 19th century.
It is an imposing settlement with numerous forts, living places and even a rudimentary drainage system and gives a good insight into how people lived here centuries ago during the early Luo migration and settlement into South Nyanza. Thimlich Ohinga is about an hour from Migori town.
